“Life behind monastery walls – the Cistercians at Altzella Monastery”

On a special tour you can learn more about the strict rules and everyday life in a medieval Cistercian order. We will guide your group around selected points of the former monastery at Altzella, and entertain you according to the old traditions of the order and with typical Saxon specialties.

Short description

The ruins and buildings of the once rich and powerful Cistercian monastery are situated in a Romanticist landscaped park. Its monks disappeared long ago, at the Reformation, but the Converses’ House with its refectory and library as well as the mausoleum of the Wettins are still evidence of bygone days. Where had the monks once come from? What rules did they live by and what were their everyday lives like? A special insight tour provides the answers: while the visitor drinks a beaker of wine in the refectory, they can experience the strict rules of the order at that time and “the measure of the drink”. At the end we will treat you to coffee and typical Saxon delicacies.

- Coffee to finish off: a pot of coffee and Saxon custard tart

- Chance to visit the shop of the museum

Prices and service

Entrance and guided tour can be booked in advance, April to October, (duration about 2.5 hours), price € 22.00 per person, for groups of 15 - 35 people. It is important that you inform us beforehand. Free admission for coach drivers and tour guides. Limited accessibility because of barriers. Information about other services on request. Tourist-orientated infrastructure: bus let-off point and parking space direct on monastery grounds. Gastronomy: cafeteria on monastery grounds.

Tour parties and coach groups are very welcome at Altzella Monastery Park. Our car park, directly in front of our service area, is accessible also for coaches and buses.
